•    Chapter Elections:
We finally have candidates to fill the following Chapter officer positions:

Chair Elect:    Erin Wright, CNM
Secretary:    Anne Seifert, CNM
Nominating Committee member:  Lee Ann Walker-Illig, CNM

We still need someone to step up for Chapter Chair, since our previous Chair Elect, Nancy Woods, is no longer in Maryland.
If interested, contact one of our nominating committee members:  Mairi Rothman: mairicnm@starpower.net or Jenny Kaye: jkaye1@umm.edu

•    Update on the status of our bill, HB 1407:

Mairi will be meeting with Pat Noble and her legislative aide (Shirley DeVaris) to discuss the bill.  The first study meeting will be in October and include reps from MHA, BPQA, MD ACOG, BON and MD ACNM, as well as someone from Heather Mizeur’s office to mediate.  Stay tuned for more information.

We still need volunteers for the legislative committee.  Imagine passing your midwifery boards and actually being able to start working without waiting months for the Board of Nursing to sign paperwork. Sound good? Email Mairi Rothman  legislative@midwivesofmaryland.org to volunteer.

•    Remember that our profession is only as strong as we are and that we still need to fight for our right to provide women with the care that they want and need.  Please see the Resolutions from the AMA below to fuel your fire.  Think of them when you are trying to decide if you want to volunteer for our legislative committee, which is battling for each and every one of you.  Think of them when deciding if you want to contribute to the Chapter with your time and/or financial support.

The American Medical Association’s 2008 Resolutions included:

o    Resolution 204: which opposes the creation of boards of midwifery and calls for greater physician oversight in midwifery practice.

o    Resolution 205: in which AMA declares its intention to support state legislation to promote hospital and birth center birth over home birth.

o    Resolution 214: which declares that nurses who are Doctors of Nursing Practice only be able to practice under the supervision of a physician and as part of a medical team with the final authority and responsibility for the patient under the supervision of a licensed physician.
